Spark Conscience: Power Purge & Shred Returns to Crystal City

Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – Celebrate Earth Day’s 45th Anniversary by securely recycling electronics and shedding documents at the Crystal City Business Improvement District’s (BID) annual Power Purge & Shred on Wednesday, April 22nd from 7 AM to 7 PM. This event has safely recycled over 139 tons of electronics including monitors, printers, CPUs, servers, cables, batteries, and more. The collaboration among CEA, Vornado/Charles E. Smith, and the eCyclers division of the Kane Company provides an opportunity for Crystal City residents and workers to drop off everything from batteries, desktop computers and laptops, to TVs, monitor and microwaves.

Documents will be shredded onsite courtesy of the Office Shredding division of the Kane Company. Document destruction can help reduce the risk of identity theft and disclosure of sensitive information while ensuring proper compliance with existing privacy laws and keeping abreast of new or updated federal regulations. The Kane Company can help ensure you meet the guidelines of corporate ethics programs, safeguard your public image, and protect you, your customers and employees from identity theft.

In addition to electronic recycling and paper shredding, the Power Purge and Shred has two new features this year. For the first, the Crystal City BID has partnered with Bikes For The World to allow Crystal City residents and workers to donate old bicycles to people in need. Bike For The World’s mission is to make quality used bicycles and parts affordable and available to lower income people and select institutions in developing countries, and to enhance their lives and livelihoods through better transport. The second is a partnership with Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE) to host a light bulb exchange. AIRE is asking guests to bring their old incandescent bulbs to the event in exchange for a new LED light bulb. (Limit one per person, and while supplies last).

Snap a photo of your purged goods and post on Twitter or Instagram with #PowerPurge and a clever goodbye quote and our favorite will win a gift certificate to a free class at TechShop.

The Power Purge & Shred is one of several green-themed events that are part of the make up the Crystal City BID’s Crystal Green Program. For more information on Crystal Green and other Crystal City events, visit www.crystalcity.org.
