A Grand Vision

National Landing continues to make monumental investments to become the most connected urban downtown in America. National Landing is building on its rich historic legacy of transportation by reimagining the area as a next-generation hub for all modes of mobility. Guided by this vision, partners from the public and private sector have come together and put forth visions for more than 30 projects totaling more than $4.5 billion worth of investment to position National Landing to meet the needs of residents, workers, and families within the next decade.

Mass Transit

Mass transit is the backbone of National Landing’s transportation network. The downtown’s robust transit choices allow thousands of residents, employees and visitors to travel throughout the region quickly and conveniently, without worrying about traffic or parking. Building on those assets by adding capacity and increasing connectivity is the foundation of National Landing’s long-term transportation strategy.

Complete Streets

National Landing is the site of over 20 bike and pedestrian infrastructure projects totaling over $220 million in investment to make its roadways safer and better connected through all forms of transportation. The picture of micromobility in the area is already changing due to these investments, as 75 percent of trips in the neighborhood are taken without a car. The Crystal City Bike Network, proposed by the county in spring 2021, is a collection of projects that will bring the roadways of National Landing together for all forms of mobility and finish integration in 2025.

Regional Rail

Regional Rail is a key part of National Landing’s transportation network, providing thousands of suburban employees with convenient, traffic-free commutes. Today, Virginia Railway Express provides weekday service to National Landing. By the end of the decade, projects like Long Bridge will enable increased VRE service, as well as new service from Amtrak and MARC that will open up new opportunities across the region.

Big Move Projects

The below projects managed by various state, local, federal, and private sector organizations make-up the over $4 billion of investment in mobility projects in National Landing.

Long Bridge

Investments in the regional freight, commuter, and Amtrak capacity of National Landing will have regional impacts. Through local, state, private, and federal partners, the neighborhood is seeing an unparallelled investment in both local and regional rail. At the forefront of rail investments in the region is the Long Bridge Rail & Pedestrian Bridge Project, a $2.3 billion investment to add a new rail and pedestrian bridge between National Landing and Washington D.C., allowing for increased rail capacity and a dedicated pedestrian connector across the Potomac River by 2030.

Crystal City to Reagan National Airport Multimodal Connection (CC2DCA)

The Crystal City to Reagan National Airport Multimodal Connection (CC2DCA) will link Reagan National Airport to the Washington D.C. metro area via a 1200-foot-long bridge over George Washington Memorial Parkway terminating in an intermodal hub in Crystal City connecting with WMATA, VRE, and the Mount Vernon Trail. With project funding fully secured in 2024, CC2DCA is set to begin operations in 2028, delivering a one-of-a-kind multimodal connection from Washington D.C.’s busiest airport directly to its metro area.

Route 1 Multimodal Improvements Project

Investing in people-centered mobility is a critical part of the transportation project investment occurring in National Landing. One of the projects at the center of this investment is the Route 1 Multimodal Improvements Project, which will bring Route 1, currently a highway through much of the district, to an at-grade boulevard, reconnecting the thriving communities of National Landing. This bold transformation of a highway into a vibrant boulevard is a cornerstone of the transformation of National Landing into a truly connected urban downtown.

Route 1 Multimodal Improvements Project Page

Crystal City Metro East Entrance

National Landing is investing in local rail to further connect the region. Through a public-private partnership, WMATA will build a second entrance to the Crystal City Metro Station, giving passengers a direct connection to Crystal Drive. This station will integrate with the intermodal hub created through the CC2DCA project and provide passengers with seamless connections to VRE service, National Airport, and the Mount Vernon Trail.

Transitway Extension to Pentagon City

This project will add 1.1 miles to the 4.5-mile Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway. With the extension, the completed Transitway will run from the Braddock Road Metrorail station in the City of Alexandria to the Pentagon City Metrorail station in Arlington.

The project will extend the bus-only lanes and add five new transit stations with associated station amenities. The stations will be similar in style and appearance to the existing Transitway stations on Crystal Drive and Clark Street.

National Landing Station

VRE is moving forward with plans to build a new regional rail station in National Landing. The new station is designed to accommodate the increased VRE service enabled by Transforming Rail in Virginia, as well as new service by Amtrak and MARC trains.

Army Navy Drive Complete Street

The project will rebuild Army Navy Drive as a multimodal complete street featuring enhanced bicycle, transit, and pedestrian facilities. The goal of the project is to improve the local connections between the Pentagon and the commercial, residential and retail destinations in Pentagon City and Crystal City.

Army Navy Drive Complete Street Project Page

Boundary Channel Interchange

This project upgraded the Boundary Channel Drive at I-395 interchange and provided bicycle and pedestrian improvements in the area. The project included reducing underutilized roadway capacity on Boundary Channel Drive in order to construct a 12-foot-wide westbound shared-use path and an eight-foot-wide eastbound sidewalk. The half-mile shared-use path creates a new link from the Mount Vernon Trail to the Pentagon and Long Bridge Park by tying into the existing path that parallels the southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway ramp to southbound I-395.Agency: Virginia Department of Transportation

Potomac Yard Metro Station

The newest infill station in the WMATA rail network provides service to the Potomac Yard neighborhood connecting passengers to Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus, housing, retail, and trails.

Project Journey

The 225,000-square-foot new concourse marks the permanent closure of Gate 35X and its busing operation. American Airlines relocated its regional flights to the concourse's 14 new gates. Passengers flying into and out of the concourse can enjoy sweeping views through large windows, spacious holdrooms, direct boarding to aircraft and other amenities.
