A Colorful Legacy: Celebrating Synetic Theater’s Mural in Crystal City
For the past five years, the striking mural on the façade of the former Synetic Theater has been a symbol of creativity and community in Crystal City. Tokyo-based artist Jay Shogo was selected through a global competition sponsored by the BID and JBG Smith and in partnership with Arlington County and Synetic Theater to reimagine the theater’s exterior. Shogo’s winning design represents the connection between time, people, and communities through fluid patterns and vibrant colors. Reflecting on his work, Shogo said, "I am honored to have contributed to the prosperity of Crystal City and National Landing."
The mural became a beloved piece of public art, enhancing the neighborhood’s pedestrian experience and amplifying the area’s cultural vibrancy in a time of significant transformation in National Landing. Like Synetic Theater, the mural pushed artistic boundaries and contributed to the district’s growing spirit of innovation. .
Now, as the Marriott Crystal City is being renovated to become the AC Hotel National Landing, the front façade of the former Synetic Theater will be transformed to align with the hotel’s polished new look to create a cohesive, unified façade. Though the artwork may no longer grace the neighborhood, its impact on the community and the lasting legacy of its vibrant colors will be remembered as a milestone in National Landing’s artistic journey.
Serving as a solid foundation to bringing temporary art and placemaking to National Landing, this process paved the way for “Harmony” at the Crystal City Metro Plaza and “Waaves” along the Mount Vernon Trail. Moving forward, the BID will engage artists in a similar way to beautify the public realm through the soon-to-be released Placemaking Toolkit.
