Colada Shop: Daniella Senior

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Daniella Senior, the passionate entrepreneur and culinary expert behind Colada Shop, a vibrant cafe that brings the rich flavors of the Caribbean to National Landing. Daniella’s story is a testament to how cultural heritage, perseverance, and a love for community can shape a business.

Tell us your story. How did you land here, in National Landing?

The journey to National Landing feels like the culmination of years of passion for sharing my heritage through food. When the opportunity arose to open Colada Shop in this dynamic and evolving area, it felt like a perfect fit. National Landing is an exciting community—a blend of residents, professionals, and visitors—that perfectly aligns with Colada Shop’s mission of bringing people together over great coffee, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Can you share the inspiration behind the name and concept of Colada Shop?

Colada Shop is inspired by my love for Cuban culture, where coffee is more than just a drink—it’s about connection, community, and conversation. The name "Colada" reflects the iconic Cuban coffee experience: a small, sweet cup of coffee shared with friends and family. This spirit of togetherness is at the heart of our concept, creating a lively, colorful space where everyone is welcome to enjoy a little slice of the Caribbean.

How has your cultural background and heritage influenced your culinary journey and the flavors at Colada Shop?

Growing up in the Dominican Republic, I was surrounded by bold flavors, vibrant colors, and a deep sense of community. These elements have profoundly influenced my culinary journey, and at Colada Shop, I bring those Caribbean and Latin influences to every dish. From the menu to the décor, it’s about celebrating our roots and making everyone who visits feel at home.

How did your time at the Culinary Institute of America and experiences with renowned chefs shape your approach to food and hospitality?

The Culinary Institute of America was transformative for me, teaching discipline, creativity, and a deep understanding of the culinary arts. Working alongside renowned chefs showed me the dedication it takes to succeed in this industry and reinforced that food is a universal language that creates connections. These lessons are infused into everything we do at Colada Shop, blending fine dining standards with a warm, community-centered spirit.

Colada Shop has become a community hub. How do you maintain that connection, and how does local culture influence your business?

Community is at the heart of what we do. We engage with local events, support organizations, and constantly listen to our guests to maintain that connection. Whether through live music, art shows, or partnerships with local businesses, we aim to be more than just a coffee shop. National Landing’s diverse and vibrant culture influences our menu, décor, and overall vibe, reflecting the community we serve.

What are some of your favorite items on the menu, and what makes them special?

One of my personal favorites is the Cuban Sandwich, a classic with a twist that reflects my Caribbean roots. I also love our Pastelitos—flaky pastries filled with guava and cheese that remind me of my childhood. Of course, I have to mention our Café con Leche (iced and ¼ sweet)—our strong Cuban coffee is essential for powering through busy days! Every dish on our menu holds a connection to my culture and memories, which makes them truly special.

What challenges have you faced as an entrepreneur, and what advice would you offer aspiring business owners?

Navigating the complexities of running a business while staying true to our mission has been challenging, especially during the pandemic. However, these challenges have strengthened my passion for what we do. I hope to inspire other entrepreneurs, especially women and those from underrepresented backgrounds, to pursue their dreams. Authenticity and perseverance are essential—embrace your culture and stay true to your vision.

Any exciting plans on the horizon for Colada Shop?

We’re always evolving and finding new ways to connect with our community. In the coming months, we’ll be expanding our menu with seasonal offerings, exploring additional locations, and introducing more immersive experiences that celebrate the flavors we love. Stay tuned for exciting events and collaborations that will bring even more of Colada Shop’s spirit to National Landing!
