The JoGo Project is a WAMMIE award-winning Jazz and Go-Go fusion ensemble created by Saxophonist, Composer, and DC Jazz veteran Elijah Jamal Balbed. Formed in 2014 during Elijah's participation in Strathmore's Artist-in-Residence program, The JoGo Project has since released several acclaimed recording projects, performed at DC Jazz Festival, Blues Alley and The Kennedy Center, and in 2018 broke ground as the first ever Go-Go band to perform in Russia as a part of a cultural diplomacy tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Elijah is an alumnus of the legendary Jazz program at Howard University and is featured on several albums with the Howard University Jazz Ensemble and Jazztet between 2008-2012. In 2011, while a student at Howard, Elijah was afforded the rare opportunity to fill in with Godfather of Go-Go Chuck Brown; eventually joining the band full time until Chuck's death in 2012. Since then, it has become Elijah's mission to keep the legacy of Chuck Brown alive, spread knowledge and awareness about Go-Go music, and to bring his Jazz and Go-Go worlds together to create something unique but also authentic.
