Women's History Month Spotlight: Shaheen Hossini

By Luke Fichter

As owner of Flowers with Love since 1998, Shaheen Hossini has been a long-time symbol of joy in National Landing. Shaheen remains inspired by the purity of floral arrangements and the unique stories they represent. We sat down with Shaheen to learn more about her passion for flowers, her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, and the power of being her own boss.

Tell us your story and how you landed here, in National Landing.

We purchased our store here in 1998. We were originally located in the Buchanan Shops and eventually moved over to our current location in 2007.

So why flowers? What do you love about flowers?

They are so pure and beautiful.  From the amazing colors, shapes, and smells they are a true work of God. Each arrangement can be so different and unique and they always bring such joy to everyone.

Flowers often carry deep meanings and stories. Is there a particular flower or arrangement that holds significant meaning to you?

The spring bulb flowers, like tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, and iris are very special as they signify the beginning of spring. In other words, the start of a new beginning after the cold harsh winter.  They always bring a smile to my face with hopes of warmer weather and more new growth in nature.

What advice do you have for others who might consider starting their own small business?

It is scary to step out of your comfort zone and start your own business. There is a learning curve so make sure you have enough funds to get you through the early days. Even as you make a name for yourself and the business starts to thrive, it's important to keep extra funds aside for those rainy days. I have seen businesses fail because they did not have a back up plan for those unexpected times, like the pandemic, when business slowed or stopped. Another small piece of advice would be to make sure you do something you love. If you do something you love and work hard, then success is possible.

How does your identity influence your work?

As a mother of two, I understand the sacrifices you have to make.  Fortunately, as I grew my business, I was able to keep align my working hours with when my kids were at school. I'm also very detail oriented and particular about every arrangement that leaves our store. I want to make sure that each and every customer gets the attention they deserve.

Where do you find inspiration? Do you hope to inspire other women entrepreneurs to start their own business?

My inspiration comes from my flowers. Everyday is a new day filled with new opportunities and surprises. While starting a business is a very tough decision, it's rewarding as you realize you made it happen and gain the satisfaction that you did it! There is no better feeling than being your own boss.

What's something about flowers (or your business) that people might be surprised to learn?

I didn't know the first thing about flowers, the care, the design, or even names of different varieties when we purchased the store. The prior owner taught me everything and worked with us for 14 years. This would not be the way I would encourage someone to start a business, but we were fortunate to have great help, and worked hard to get to where we are today.
