Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: MasPaz and Juan Pineda

National Landing is home to two significant murals by renowned Latin American artists MasPaz and Juan Pineda, each reflecting their cultural roots and artistic vision.

“Mural 23” – 23rd Street

Running the length of 23rd Street, “Mural 23” is a massive collaboration between MasPaz and Juan Pineda.

MasPaz, aka Federico Frum, was born in Bogotá, Colombia, adopted, and raised in Arlington. His name translates to “more peace,” and that’s exactly what he brings to his work. Growing up, his home was filled with Colombian tapestries hung by his mother, their bold lines and vibrant shapes sparking a deep connection to his heritage. These tapestries, with their intricate designs, were an early source of inspiration that continues to echo through his murals today, weaving together his love for indigenous culture and the environment. His art started in the streets, learning the power of typography through graffiti, and evolved into creating murals across the globe—from Pakistan to Mexico to Crystal City. MasPaz’s contribution to Mural 23 is a testament to his journey, blending geometric patterns and nature-inspired designs to promote peace and environmental consciousness.

D.C.-based artist Juan Pineda also brings his unique energy to the mural, creating a dynamic complementary work. Known for his vibrant color palette and dynamic shapes, Pineda’s work mixes contemporary urban art with traditional influences. His murals across the D.C. area are a signature of his deep connection to his roots, and Mural 23 is no different. With Pineda’s touch, the piece becomes a living, breathing entity—one that connects the community to a larger story of cultural identity and urban evolution.

Adding to this collaborative masterpiece are artists Cita “CheLove” Sadeli and Jeff “Jahru” Huntington, both of whom infuse their distinct styles into the mural.

Route 1 Traffic Barrier Mural

Along Route 1, Juan Pineda transforms a traffic barrier into a colorful and compelling mural. What could’ve been just another concrete divider is now a bold and colorful expression of urban street art. Pineda has a knack for revitalizing public spaces, and here he injects life into an otherwise functional structure, showcasing the vibrant spirit of Latino culture. This mural reflects his ongoing mission to preserve public art while pushing boundaries.

Together, these murals are visual narratives. MasPaz and Juan Pineda are more than artists; they’re storytellers who use public space as their canvas, connecting National Landing to global traditions and cultural heritage.
