June 2021 - Letter from Executive Director

Dear National Landing Community,

After navigating the pandemic together since March 2020, I am thrilled to be able to say National Landing is back open for business. With that said, we are excited about everything on the horizon from future programming, new retail and restaurant openings to welcoming the business community back to their offices over the next couple of months.

To warmly welcome our National Landing visitors, we are planning a beautification project to upgrade and enhance the plaza at the Crystal City metro station entrance. This project is also inclusive of the reimagination of the retention wall into an artistic mural, where we issued a call for artists to help us produce a work of art that delivers iconic imagery with an engaging and memorable aesthetic. In enlivening this important plaza with a new signature mural, we are building on our efforts to foster a more vibrant public realm and provide an impactful sense of arrival for people entering the downtown district via transit.

We recently launched “People Before Cars” a public awareness and education campaign that is focused on communicating the benefits of transforming Route 1 from an auto-oriented highway to a street-level urban boulevard. The campaign reinforces our organization’s bold vision that focuses on people-first mobility. To learn more about our vision for Route 1 and to join our movement for a greener, safer, better Route 1, check out our pledge here.

Get ready for an active summer in National Landing full of exciting activations, celebrations and programming. We’re excited to welcome the return of the beloved Fridays at the Fountain series, more outdoor fitness programming, as well as Pride surprise and delight moments throughout June. We’ll also be making an announcement very soon about a unique outdoor flex space for all to enjoy and experience this summer.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone out and about experiencing all that National Landing has to offer this summer! As always – stay connected with us @NationalLanding or check out our website for upcoming exciting announcements.
